Subscription & Account FAQ

What is a Chronicle of Higher Education account?

An account is needed in order to gain access to our articles, receive newsletters, or job alerts. You can create a free account here. Once you do so, please check your email. You’ll receive access as soon as you confirm your email address.

How To Get to My Account Benefits

Use the “My Account” menu in the upper right of our site to gain access to your “Account Benefits” page, which includes links to free reports, advice guides and data.

Be sure to review the Account Benefits feature in your account menu once you have signed in. There you will find links to free reports, advice guides, and data. You can also sign up for coming virtual events, where we decode the news and trends broadly affecting higher education, and also browse an archive of past events for on-demand viewing.

If you already have a Chronicle.com account, simply sign in and start reading.

If you have an account or are a subscriber and have difficulty accessing content, try signing out and signing back in to your account. If you continue to experience problems, call our customer support team at 202-466-1032 or email us at help@chronicle.com.

I can’t recall my password.

For privacy and security purposes, we do not resend passwords. But you can reset your password for your account. (You will need to know the email address you used when you created your account.)

What happens once I create my account?

You’ll be able to sample anything on our site — award-winning news coverage, agenda-setting opinion essays, advice to help you advance in your career, our daily and weekly newsletters, and more. When you reach your limit of free content, we’ll ask you to subscribe.

When you register, we’ll ask you three questions to help us understand your interests and needs. We’ll use that information to tailor content recommendations, curate news about your college or university, and provide relevant job alerts, among other things.

What will you do with the information I share with The Chronicle?

The information we collect from you will be used to personalize your experience, recognize you each time you sign in, help us understand our audience, and manage or improve our services for you. We’ll also email you based on your selected preferences, including newsletters, notifications about your account, and updates or special offers from select partners. You can adjust your email preferences at any time.

After I create an account, how many articles will I be able to read for free?

You will be able to read two articles per month. To read more than two articles per month, please purchase a subscription.

I can’t afford to buy a subscription. What are my options?

We know that buying an individual subscription is a commitment. But your financial support is what makes it possible for us to bring you the best in higher-education journalism.

Is there any way to access Chronicle content through my institution?

Many colleges and universities purchase access to chronicle.com for their employees through an institutional site license. Check with your librarian to see if you have site license access. If your institution does not, suggest that your administrator contact our site license support team at 202-466-1074 or email us at sitelicense@chronicle.com.

I’m already an individual subscriber. What if I don’t have a chronicle.com account?

If you’re already a subscriber but do not have a chronicle.com account, you can call our customer support team at 800-728-2803 or email us at subscriptions@chronicleservice.com to link your subscription to your account.

How much does a subscription cost?

Please visit our subscription information page for pricing details.

How can I find your best rate?

We offer a variety of subscription options to suit your needs. Our discounted introductory rates are available to new subscribers only.

Will the price of my subscription change?

Some of our subscription offers include discounted introductory rates. When your introductory term expires, your subscription will be automatically renewed at the regular rate shown on the page where you subscribed.

Does my subscription have to be renewed automatically?

Our convenient automatic-renewal program ensures subscribers enjoy continuous access to essential Chronicle journalism and industry-leading benefits. You won’t have to worry about dealing with renewal notices, missing issues, or having your service interrupted.

You are in complete control of your subscription, and you may opt out of our automatic-renewal program at any time. But your access will lapse if you do not renew before your subscription expires. After subscribing, please visit your My Account page to manage your preferences.

I need to talk to someone about my subscription, not my account.

Please give us a call at 800-728-2803 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET and a representative will be more than happy to assist you. If you should happen to contact us after business hours or on the weekend, please leave a message and you will be contacted the next business day.

Can I share my username and password so that a colleague can read the premium content, too?

No. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and accounts, and are solely responsible for any unauthorized use by others of your account. For more information, read our User Agreement.

How can I take advantage of the reports, data, and virtual events promised with my Chronicle subscription?

All active subscribers will receive access to an Account Benefits feature when signed in on chronicle.com. There you’ll find a curated library of Chronicle reports, guides, and data, as well as opportunities to register for quarterly virtual events that delve into our best news and enterprise reporting. You’ll also find an archive of past events for on-demand viewing.

These tools and resources complement the unlimited digital access you already enjoy. Be sure to check the Account Benefits feature often to stay on top of the new reports, advice guides, and events we’ll be adding regularly.

This feature replaces our previous report credit program as a new-and-improved way of sharing actionable report insights with readers. While we will no longer be offering annual report credit in the future, any remaining unused credit remains redeemable at the Chronicle Store until the end of your current subscription term.

Should you experience any issues with the Account Benefits feature, please feel free to give us a call at 202-466-1032 or email us at help@chronicle.com.
